Congenital heart disease (CHD) is an abnormality that develops before birth. Through the advancement of medical care, the likelihood of babies born with CHD sur- viving to the age of 18 has risen to approximately 69% according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Understanding that it takes more than just medicine to cure a child, Le Bonheur offers family-centered care to patients with CHD. The execu- tive Co-Director of the recruitment of the Heart Institute, MD, states, “We have surgical and medical teams in place to look beyond patient survival – now, it’s about lifestyle and giving children and adults with congenital heart defects and heart muscle diseases a great quality life.” Below is a list of some initiatives Le Bonheur has taken regarding family-centered healthcare.
Religious Services
When going through difficult times, keeping a clear and healthy state of mind is essential. As a base of support, ministers of faith such as Catholic Priests, Jewish, Rabbi, or Muslim Imams can be called upon request to provide emotional support and religious guidance and comfort that can encourage patience and embed hope into the patient’s family. Ethics consultation and a quiet place for prayer are also provided for such services.
Sibling Playroom
Trying to provide proper care to a sick child while trying to entertain and contain the attention of other children can take a toll on everyone. Not only may it disturb med- ical professionals at work and troubled parents, but it may also put unnecessary stress and burden on the sibling(s) in question. As such, Le Bonheur offers a specialized, des- ignated, and short-term childcare playroom; its interactive environment offers wide- spread peace of mind.
Family Resource Center
Sometimes only knowing that a sick child is being cared for by professionals in their field does not offer adequate relief. Proper reliance on information regarding what is happening to a dear family member is a necessity. Proper guidance on the topic is an important aspect needed so that one can assure both themselves and their loved ones that better health is not out of their reach. Le Bonheur’s family resource center offers tools that convey an understanding of a patient’s disease in a comfortable and welcoming setting. Designed by families and caregivers, the center relays reliable med- ical information; available in both English and Spanish. Some other amenities included are a research computer area, a business center, a library for children and adults, a family living space, support groups, community outreach programs, Memphis area at- tractions, information packets, family services, and much more. Staff members, others going through similar situations, and programs designed to encourage a positive mind- set are also available to fulfill any communication requirements a family might be in need of.
Child Life
Healthcare workers who focus on both the psychosocial needs of children while also collaborating with the child’s parents are generally set up for success. Certified child specialists that consider the needs of patients and family members are supplied by Le Bonheur. The hospital transparently advocates for and brings forth the use of beneficial family-centered care.
